Davide Tonizzo has created a spectacular, one-of-a-kind piece for the Ikea Auktion. This event will take place during the Design Exchange Intersection Gala. Twenty designers, architects and celebrities were asked to create objects using products from the Ikea catalogue. Each piece will go to silent auction with proceeds to benefit the Design Exchange, Canada’s Design Museum.

Tonizzo’s contribution to the event is a bookcase entitled You Can Dance...

“When designing the piece, I thought of Sweden and when I think of Sweden I think of ABBA,” says the designer. “All of a sudden, the chorus from Dancing Queen is in my head and I’m time-travelling back to the '70s disco era.”

With the disco theme in mind, Tonizzo looked to the most iconic image of the era for inspiration, the poster from the movie Saturday Night Fever. The bookcase’s components mimic John Travolta’s famous pose from the movie and give the furniture piece dynamic movement.

Using Ivar shelving, Tonizzo has created an angular expression of the human form doing the “Hustle.." The various limbs and sections create interesting nooks and crannies for books, collectables, DVDs and CDs. The depth will also hold vinyl records if you still have your disco collection.

“As I design furniture throughout the year for manufacturers, I wanted to create a fun, iconic object for the party atmosphere of the Gala,” adds Tonizzo.

To give the piece an extra bit of discoteque chic, the designer added a row of Ikea’s Dioder LED lights to one of the hands. The lights change colour and mimics the boogie ball in the movie poster.

Davide Tonizzo is a Toronto-based industrial designer with a diverse range of clients. Past projects include furniture, ceramics, handbags, bath wares and transportation products. His projects have received numerous awards and have been featured in international design publications. Find out more about Davide Tonizzo at designd-online.com.

The Design Exchange Intersection Gala will take place at the Design Exchange on Nov. 16 at 8 pm.
