Herzog & de Meuron in Southampton
At the Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, Studio as Muse explores the notion of the artist’s studio – a theme central to the design concept for the new museum, conceived by internationally renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron. Studio as Muse is actually three exhibitions in one. Herzog & de Meuron’s Design for the New Parrish provides the first in-depth look at the firm’s work in progress, inspired by the east end of Long Island’s rich artistic legacy and remarkable landscape and light; the exhibition includes a display of 130 small- and large-scale models constructed throughout the evolution of the project. Two complementary exhibitions complete the investigation: one from the artist’s point of view, Fairfield Porter: Inside and Outside the Artist’s Studio; the other from the vantage point of the omnipresent observer, Studio in Miniature: Joe Fig.
Says Parrish director Trudy Kramer. “The opening of the exhibition marks the beginning of an exciting era for the Parrish, which will culminate in the completion of our new home in 2009.”
Studio as Muse runs from June 3 to Aug. 5.
