Andy Warhol at the WAG

WINNIPEG The Winnipeg Art Gallery will hold a retrospective exhibition of Pop artist Andy Warhol from Oct. 4 to Jan. 20, 2008. Andy Warhol: Larger Than Life will begin on the 20th anniversary of the artists death in 1987.

Andy Warhol was the icon of Pop culture, and his art is probably the most easily recognizable in the world, says Pierre Arpin, WAG director. This exhibition is a significant undertaking for the WAG as we will cover Warhols entire career beginning with his early days just out of art school. The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh has generously given us a free hand in choosing the images and we have a preliminary list of 150 workssilkscreen prints, photographs, drawings, and film.

The exhibition will also draw on archival records and artwork to examine the artists Canadian connectionsportraits of people such as Wayne Gretzky and Karen Kain, and his early exhibitions at other Canadian galleries and at Expo 67.

Andy Warhol: Larger Than Life is organized and circulated by The Winnipeg Art Gallery. Following its viewing at the WAG, the exhibition will tour to the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
