HOK’s Joe Pettipas Honoured with Distinguished Leadership Award

HOK’s Joe Pettipas received the Distinguished Leadership Award from the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) on Sunday, June 8, 2008, at the IIDA’s Annual Meeting in Chicago. The Distinguished Leadership Award was given to Joe Pettipas, IIDA, IDC, ASID, ISP, ARIDO, LEED AP for his tireless contributions to advancing the profession of interior design.

The IIDA Distinguished Leadership Award recognizes outstanding contributions to IIDA or the design community by an IIDA Professional Member. With over two decades of industry experience, Pettipas has a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced within the corporate, hospitality, retail and other branded areas of the built environment. As Vice-President and Leader of the Hospitality and Retail Group at HOK in Canada, Pettipas has been responsible for large-scale projects in the United Arab Emirates, United States, Doha, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, China, Indonesia, Mexico and Canada.

Joe’s team recently designed the Doha City Center hotels in Quatar that are scheduled to open in 2008. Doha City Centre is at the heart of one of the fastest developing regions in the world and consists of five hotel towers: Shangri-la, Rotana, Merweb, Marriott Courtyard and Marriott Renaissance. The project includes: more than 1500 hotel rooms and serviced residences; numerous bars, restaurants and lounges; spas; ballrooms; conference centers; and 90,000 square feet of outdoor amenity areas with 13 swimming and spa pools.

As an active leader in the interior design profession, Joe is a past President and Board Member of Canada’s Design Exchange, two-time former President of the Association of the Registered Interior Designers of Ontario (ARIDO), current Chair of the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), and an advocate of partnership opportunities between industry organizations. Joe received his Bachelor of Interior Design from Ryerson University, where he was an instructor for seven years. He has won countless awards and is a frequent speaker on hospitality, retail and branded interior design related issues.
