The summer set
Spring Rolls
Dialogue 38 is known for bringing style to inexpensive Toronto eateries, like the newest Spring Rolls, which opened in June at the Sheppard Centre. In this magazine’s recent Best of Canada competition, the new restaurant won a project award and its Paper Crane chandelier won a product award.
Umbra Panel
Are clients changing in today’s design environment? In front of an invited audience at the Umbra Concept Store, Umbra design director Matt Carr put the question to architects John Shnier of Kohn Shnier, Pina Petricone of Giannone Associates, Architects, and Ian MacDonald, of the eponymous firm.
Kreiss showrom
Still family owned after four generations and 70-plus years, San Diego-based Kreiss helped define California style (oversized, luxurious). Recently, sporting more compact, condo-compatible proportions, the furniture line opened its new Canadian flagship store in Toronto’s Rosedale neighbourhood.
A Design Exchange doubleheader kicked off with a panel discussion to launch the new Design Exchange publication Ourtopias, in which architectural experts Philip Beesley, Ian Chodikoff, Chris Hardwicke, Bruce Kuwabara and Charles Waldheim ponder Toronto’s future. Then guests mingled while viewing Ourtopias, an exhibit on Toronto’s multicultural suburbs, curated by Chodikoff, editor of Canadian Architect.
A bevy of body-painted models spiced up the launch of the new showroom for outdoor furniture supplier Andrew Richards, just north of the King Street East design district.
