Home Sustainable Home

The Archetype Sustainable House at the Kortright Centre in Vaughan opens to the public on Earth Day, April 22, 2009. This semi-detached, single-family dwelling one of two features JELD-WEN window and door products and showcases environmentally sustainable design and materials. The two houses serve as models of the next generation of green homes. “We’re really excited to be a part of this project,” says Sante Cigana, vice president of JELD-WEN Windows and Doors. “The building focuses on recycled, renewable and durable materials that reduce ecological impact. Those are elements that we’re very conscious of in all of our products.” As a leader in environmental stewardship and product design, JELD-WEN has donated energy-efficient windows and exterior doors to the Archetype Sustainable House. The construction called for building materials with an ENERGY STAR appropriate rating to reduce heat load and energy consumption. The donation includes Custom Wood, metal-clad windows and doors made with Low E and Argon-filled triple-pane glass. “Sustainable design is applied throughout the house,” says interior designer Terrell Wong, one of three women that conceived the home. “Low VOC and durable materials reduce detrimental ecological impact, create healthy indoor environments and long-lasting buildings.” The Archetype Sustainable House is a leader in LEED construction and once the project is completed, will become a model for energy efficient, renewable and sustainable buildings and materials. With an estimated 150,000 visitors expected annually, the test home will serve as an education facility for trades, builders, students and the public.
