The Daily Food Bank and canstruction are pleased to announce the winners of the 11th annual canstruction design event, held at Toronto’s Design Exchange in Toronto. What is canstruction? It is a unique competition highlighting the creativity and generosity of Toronto’s design professionals. Teams design and build structures completely out of canned food for the benefit of Daily Break Food Bank. With food bank usage rates on the rise this year, the 55,900 pounds of food raised by this year’s canstruction event will be welcomed by Toronto’s hungry.

This year’s winners include:

·         Jurors’ Favourite – Bridging the Great Divide, Quadrangle Architects Limited

·         Best Meal – Let’s Give a Dam, Diamond and Schmitt Architects Inc.

·         Best Use of Labels – Bouncy Castle, AECOM

·         Structural Ingenuity – The Great CAN-AID-IAN Hunger Buster, Cohos   


·         Honourable Mention – Stand Out Against Hunger, Shore Tilbe Irwin & Partners

·         Honourable Mention – “Solving the Mystery of Hunger,” Turner Fleischer Architects

The judging committee for the 11th annual canstruction event consisted of:

·         Russell Day, vice-president, Daniel et Daniel Event Creation & Catering

·         Gerrie Doyle, president, Ontario Association of Architects

·         Karen Liu, structural engineer, Delcan Corporation

·         Linda Lundstrom, chief creative officer, Eleventh Floor Apparel Ltd.

·         Jessica Rose, art director, Toronto Life magazine

The Toronto canstruction steering committee’s mission is “to demonstrate the commitment of design professionals to local communities by utilizing their skills to alleviate hunger in a unique and creative way.”
