Award-winning Australian design becomes award-winning global design

A food emporium in Canada  (Toronto’s Loblaws Maple Leaf Gardens), a revolutionary hospital for children, and a Japanese food truck in Melbourne are just three of the projects to receive gongs at this year’s Australian Interior Design Awards, announced last night.

The awards presentation, attended by the “who’s who” and “who’s next” of Australia’s interior design industry, took place at Doltone House, Jones Bay Wharf, Sydney.

Co-presented by the Design Institute of Australia, designEX and Artichoke, the ninth year of the Australian Interior Design Awards saw standards and submission numbers increase once again as Australian professionals showcased their work from here and overseas. Across all 15 categories the winning work represented briefs and budgets of all varieties, produced by both small and large practices.

This year’s Premier Award for Interior Design Excellence and Innovation went to the Billard Leece Partnership and Bates Smart for the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) in Melbourne. The therapeutic benefits of nature in the healing process underpin the overall design of the new hospital and more than 100 architects and interior designers were involved in its creation. According to the jury, the building’s interior design “will extend the experience of the power of interiors into the public realm further than any other project this year”.

Elenberg Fraser won the Sustainability Advancement Award for Vue de monde in Melbourne. The restaurant incorporates a range of sustainable features to deal with energy, water, materiality and products. The jury was particularly impressed by the strategies employed to deal with food waste and the use of locally produced furniture. “The project redefines sustainable interior design” was the overall comment and the jury went on to acknowledge that Vue de monde’s general excellence would set a “new standard for Australian design identity”.

“With 30 per cent more entries submitted than last year, the 2012 Australian Interior Design Awards  indicate a local design scene that is truly flourishing,” says event manager, Jacinta Reedy. “The work this year had the judging panel continually commenting on how, across the board, Australian designers are now influencing trends and standards globally.”
