Where there’s a Perkins+Will Canada, there’s a way

The Toronto-based studio of Perkins+Will Canada has been honoured with a prestigious International Interior Design Association Global Excellence Award for its University of Toronto Mississauga Instructional Centre. The Instructional Centre won Best of Category for cultural, institutional and educational projects. The award will be granted at a ceremony in Paris, France on Jan. 19, 2013, at the Maison & Objet trade show.

The Instructional Centre demonstrates the University of Toronto Mississauga’s commitment to strengthening the educational experience with inspirational and sustainable architecture. The building is distinguished by its cohesive green and black copper, that integrates the building with its green surroundings and poetically echoes the gradual evolution of the educational experience. Pathways and informal lounges ease student flow through building and connect the students with campus life. The building includes photovoltaic panels as sunshades and green roofs planted with indigenous meadow grasses, expressing the university’s commitment to sustainable initiatives.

This is the fourth honour for the Instructional Centre. In 2011, the project was presented with the Mississauga Urban Design Award of Excellence. This year it received a North American Copper in Architecture Award, an Interior Design Award in the IIDA’s Design Competition and an honoree award in Interior Design Magazine’s Best of Year Awards.
