KREOD: Temporary sensation

KREOD, the new architecturally striking sculpture constructed of Kebony’s sustainable wood, has won the Surface Design Award for Temporary Structure.

The Surface Design Awards are for international projects, interior or exterior, that have used surface materials in new or innovative ways. This year the Temporary Structure category attracted a particularly competitive and unusual range of entries of which KREOD was awarded the winner.

Collecting the prize from De Magazine on behalf of the KREOD team was the managing director of Pavilion Architecture, Chun Qing Li, who said: “A huge thank you to everybody that voted for us. The extraordinary partners and team that provided the products, services and support are the reason KREOD was a success: Kebony, Quintain, Ramboll, TensileFabric, Serge Ferrari, Targetti Poulsen, Uniform; Bentley; AR18; JT Consulting and my honourable team Kin Ho, Ipek Kasaroglu, Hafed Burgess, Will Your and many others.”

Chris Newton, director of the Surface Design Show, also commented on the awards: “We were delighted with the response we received to the awards.  With entries coming from the U.K., Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland and Italy, the first Surface Design Awards are truly international and reflect the creativity and innovation in our industry.”

The highlight of the Surface Design Award ceremony held recently was a speech from Eric Parry, principal of award-winning Eric Parry architects practice. His knowledge and experience is second to none and he was elected Royal Academician in 2006.

KREOD, revealed last, September, is Kebony’s latest U.K. project and London’s newest architectural landmark. KREOD is a stunning new sculpture that currently forms the centrepiece of Peninsula Square, the busy public space between the Emirates Air Line and The O2 Arena on Greenwich Peninsula. From Mar. 5 to 7, KREOD will form the media and visitor centre for Ecobuild at Excel.

The brainchild of Chun Qing Li, KREOD is an innovative architectural sculpture, organic in form, environmentally friendly and inspired by nature. Resembling three seeds, these three 20-square-metre pods combine through a series of interlocking hexagons to create an enclosed structure that is not only magnificently intricate but secure and weatherproof. KREOD functions beautifully both as an architectural landmark and an imaginative exhibition space – its three pods can be combined in a variety of configurations or installed as free-standing forms.

Using state-of-the-art parametric design tools and digital fabrication, KREOD brings together some of the most talented designers, engineers and innovative materials to challenge current thinking and showcase sustainable and forward-thinking building methods – notably Kebony.

KREOD is constructed of Kebony, the award-winning sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood and preservative treated wood. The wooden structure of KREOD is durable, resistant, sustainable, environmentally-friendly, easily-maintained and beautifully aesthetic. Kebony AS is rapidly becoming the choice of leading architects, builders and developers.

Following its stint as media and visitor centre for Ecobuild at Excel., KREOD will be popping up at high-profile locations across the primary locations within the city of London.
