A winning clock
For the fourth consecutive year, Scandinavian design company Muuto has hosted the annual design competition for Nordic design students. 2012 was another successful year for the competition, which saw more entries than ever before, with hundreds of contributions by gifted design students from all over Scandinavia.
This year’s winner is Swedish design student Charlotte Ackemar and her sculptural Tick Tock, Wooden Clock.
During late summer and early fall 2012, students of the 20 largest design schools in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland participated in Muuto’s annual design contest Muuto Talent Award. By the deadline in mid-September, the jury had received several hundred design contributions within three categories; furniture, lighting and accessories.
After a comprehensive decision-making process, the jury of the Muuto Talent Award has chosen the winner of the 2012 contest, Charlotte Ackemar. When asked about the inspiration for the clock, Ackemar says that she wanted to strip down the clock’s form and function, in this case the big body and the movement of the pendulum. By breaking down the clock in geometrical forms and lines she simplified the form and incorporated the movement of the pendulum into the shape. The focus on details was among the jury’s reasons for picking Tick Tock, Wooden Clock.
THE DESIGNER CHARLOTTE ACKEMAR: “Muuto Talent Award is a great opportunity for students to get a chance to step out of the classrooms and show their designs. It’s an indescribable feeling to be selected the winner of the competition. It’s not only a chance of making new contacts it’s also a fantastic motivator to get your design recognized by a company with great ambitions for the design scene.”
KRISTIAN BYRGE, MUUTO DIRECTOR: “The unambiguous shape and the significant Scandinavian traits in material give Tick Tock, Wooden Clock a very distinct personality. The project is ambitious and successful and Muuto is proud to be able to announce Charlotte and her design as the winner of the Muuto Talent Award.”
