All hail Maxime-Alexis Frappier

RAIC is pleased to announce Maxime-Alexis Frappier, MIRAC, as the recipient of its 2013 Young Architect Award.

Frappier graduated in 2000 from the Université de Montréal School of Architecture. In 2006 he co-founded ACDF Architecture, now comprised of 35 professionals. He works on projects throughout Canada and Asia, and has won several awards including the Governor General’s Award in Architecture, and is published in more than 30 international magazines.

In choosing Frappier, the jury said it was “impressed by the quality and breadth of work achieved by so young an architect. Jury members appreciated the clarity of the work, the bold forms, strong material palette and a clear ability to address site. Several projects are situated in challenging sites – whether due to the presence of infrastructure or complex topography. The buildings engage site, but equally construct their own, and mark a presence in their surrounding context. In addition he is exceptionally committed to the profession and vigorously contributes to training future architects both within his firm and as a university instructor.”

Frappier speaks about architecture as one tells a story, proposing spaces filled with imagery, poetry and a creativity capable of engaging all stakeholders.

He is passionate about promoting the profession and its role in the media. He is an elected director and board member of the Fonds d’assurance de l’Ordre des architectes du Québec, a board member of Maison de l’architecture du Québec, and has acted as a jury member for architectural competitions in Québec. He also contributes to several radio and television shows in Quebec and is frequently invited to speak about architecture and creativity in the media.

Frappier is an invited professor at the School of Architecture at Université de Montréal, a frequent guest critic at both Laval and McGill universities, and a guest instructor at the University of Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam.

He will receive his award during the Presidents’ Dinner & Awards Gala, Friday, June 7 at 6:30 p.m. during the 2013 RAIC-NSAA Festival of Architecture taking place June 5 to 8 at the Halifax Marriot Habourfront.

The RAIC Young Architect Award recognizes the achievements of a young architect in excellence in design, leadership and/or service to the profession. It is intended that this award will inspire other young architects to become licensed and to strive for excellence in their work.
