Preview with Diamond Schmitt Architects

Join architects Jack Diamond, Gary McCluskie and Michael Treacy, principals, with Diamond Schmitt Architects, as they preview the new Mariinsky opera/ballet house to open May 2 to 4 in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Mariinsky II is the new home of the acclaimed Mariinsky Theatre and is one of the largest lyric arts facilities in the world. Funded by the Russian Government, the theatre sits adjacent to the legendary Mariinsky Theatre (1860), where many stage masterpieces by Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korsakov received their premieres.

The 851,000-square-foot Mariinsky II features a main auditorium; a 200-seat rooftop amphitheatre; a third-floor lobby amphitheatre; multiple rehearsal rooms for Mariinsky Opera, Ballet, Orchestra and Chorus; and dining and production facilities for 2,500 staff. The state-of-the-art facilities will enable the Mariinsky to present in repertoire the most ambitious, technically demanding productions not possible in the former theatre.

The new centerpiece of the Mariinsky Cultural Complex, Mariinsky II is a structure of authentic contemporary design, one respectful of its historic context with a 21st-century sensibility.

To inaugurate Mariinsky II, Artistic and general director Valery Gergiev has programmed three celebratory days of star-studded musical and dance performances from May 2 through May 4.
