Reuber Henning’s artful Neverland stripes
Superior quality and distinctive details: these are the features that characterize the Reuber Henning company, a protagonist of “Berlin Trails” exhibition, curated by DMY Berlin during this year’s Milan Design Week.
The Neverland collection, the perfect exemple of rugs made in Nepal making use of age-old Tibetan techniques, combines the simplicity of design with the complexity of colour: even if stripes have existed in the world of design for decades, the designer has explored the limits of what you can do with it within a space of 6.3 square metres. Using the principle of coincidence in the creative process, the focus is on the unpredictable and unexpected results that develop independently of the artist’s intervention. Handmade and dearly loved, Reuber Henning rugs are unique pieces of unrivalled quality. They are produced individually in a small workshop in Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley, making use of traditional Tibetan craftsmanship.
Only selected natural materials like fine silk and hand-spun Tibetan highland wool are used and skillfully turned into rugs by hand, meaning that it takes three months to complete a piece.
No matter whether the spinning, dyeing, knitting or washing is concerned, no machine or chemical treatment is used during the whole production process, so that the rugs do not only boast highly elastic, dirt-resistant fibres, but the production by hand also gives them their unique vivid colours.
Reuber Henning supports the Nepalese workers, ensuring that each step in the production is fairly paid. Moreover, all rugs bear the Good Weave label ensuring fair working conditions and that no child labour is used in making the rugs.
