Sweden’s Henzel Studio announces its 20I4 catalogue of contemporary art rugs by founder and creative director Calle Henzel

Marking 15 years of operation, Henzel Studio is honoured to announce the release of the 2014 catalogue of contemporary art rugs by Calle Henzel, the studio’s founder and creative director.

Established in 1999 in Gothenberg, Sweden, Henzel Studio has as of recently established itself as the leading brand for collaborations with some of the most prominent contemporary artists of our time, including Helmut Lang, Marilyn Minter, Jack Pierson, Anselm Reyle and Richard Prince. Both author and producer of his designs, Henzel Studio has elevated the implementation of art into the media at hand.

While remaining at the forefront of design, Henzel Studio’s foundation and raison d’être lies in the artisanal production of local communities in Nepal that dates back thousands of years.

Through a 12-step handmade process, Henzel Studio’s rugs are unique works of art. Each piece is hand-knotted with 150 knots per square inch, and takes up to seven months to produce.

The organic and artistic process of Calle Henzel has been the driving force in the development of Henzel Studio’s designs. He has over the years in an uncompromised fashion challenged the traditional conventions of subject matter, shape, finishings and special treatments as a result of painstaking research that includes vintage treatments, intricate surface compositions and even natural erosion – methodologies that further blur the distinction between art and design.

In May 2014, Henzel Studio launched Henzel Studio Collaborations, an unprecedented and ongoing collection of art rugs designed in collaboration with some of the most influential artists of our time, including Assume Vivid Astro Focus, Scott Campbell,  Leo Gabin, Robert Knoke, Helmut Lang, Linder, Marilyn Minter, Anselm Reyle. Jack Pierson, Richard Prince, Juergen Teller and Mickalene Thomas. Fall 2014 will mark the debut of Henzel Studio Heritage, a collection of art rugs designed in close collaboration with artists’ foundations, starting with Tom of Finland Foundation.

Henzel Studio is located in Gothenburg on the southwest coast of Sweden – an area rich in textile design and manufacturing history. Ethical and environmentally friendly production practices are fundamental to Henzel Studio’s quality standards and integral to the company’s future development. The New Zealand and Himalayan wools used are two of the purest and most natural fibres in the world, and by naturea a biodegradable resource. The material is exclusively dyes with ecological pigments from Switzerland. All Studio Henzel rugs are certified by Goodweave, an independent organization that upholds rug manufacturing facilities to stringent criteria as it pertains to labour conditions.
