The magical Ripple light – by London’s Poetic Lab – comes to Toronto

Thrilling visitors to Toronto’s Avenue Road (on Eastern Avenue) is Ripple by London’s Poetic Lab. What exactly is Ripple? In the words of Poetic Lab: “Ripple is a moving light piece that expresses the beauty of the material glass, celebrating the process of it’s making. Each Ripple set contains a large rotating projection dome and a smaller light dome ensconcing the light source. A focussed beam of light projects from the lighting dome through both walls of the mouth-blown, unevenly shaped and gently rotating projection dome. This creates a play of shadow and light in an ever-changing, moving ripple pattern – beauty that goes beyond the material itself. Ripple is available in large and medium sizes and various surface finishes.”

ABOUT POETIC LAB

Poetic Lab is a London-based joint studio founded by designer Hanhsi Chen and Shikai Tseng after they met and graduated from Royal College of Art in London. The duo shares a central design philosophy of the studio: the belief in the poetry of objects and materials. The duo acquired very diversed experiences before they decided to work together, which enables them to shape an object from multiple perspectives.

Chen and Tseng teamed up for an joint exhibition in SaloneSatellite 2013 called “Beyond Object,” where they showcased a collection of objects composed by light and shadows. The results were better than expected; they claimed winner of the design report award, and third prize of Salone Satellite Award, both with the project Glass Ripple. The success soon led to an dedicated decision of a permanent joint studio – Poetic Lab.
