NOW SHOWING (as part of TO DO): “Behind the Glass” celebration of form presented by Figure3 and Haworth

In its fifth year, the Toronto Design Offsite Festival (TO DO) is an annual festival that celebrates the unique diversity of Canada’s energetic design scene.

Presented by Figure3 and Haworth, using Cappellini and Haworth Collection furniture pieces, “Behind the Glass” is an invitation to lose yourself in the theatre of design. It runs at Haworth’s Toronto showroom (55 University Ave.) through Saturday, Jan. 25.

It is not to be missed!

Manipulated by light and shadow, each of the five unique installations showcase the artistry of the pieces and invoke the art of possibility.

DRIFT AWAY is inspired by flight. Created from the Garment Chair (Benjamin Hubert for Haworth Collection, 2012) and the Cloud Storage piece (Rowan and Erwan Bouroullec for Cappellini, 2004), the pieces are suspended among delicate origami birds, floating high above the clouds.

TINY DANCER is composed of the Ribbon Stool (Nendo for Cappellini, 2007) with flowing satin ribbon mirroring the fluid and effortless motion captured in the curved metal of the stool.

In SPRING PROMISES, the Tulip Armchair (Marcel Wanders for Cappellini, 2010) transports viewers to a faraway field of tulips. The curvaceous form of the piece exposes the strength and delicacy of the flower.

PSYCHIC SPY is an interactive installation that capitalizes on the exposure and perspective of the Windowseat (Mike & Maaike for Haworth Collection, 2013), offering a playful look into the inner workings of the mind.

The final installation, HOOKED, mimics the squiggles of the metal Tuta coat structure (Nendo for Cappellini, 2008), playing with shadow to create an eccentric suspended illusion.

Says Figure3 principal and “Behind the Glass” creative director Christopher Wright, the installations are meant to evoke an emotional response: “The drama of design is that it reveals itself differently to everyone – that is what we are truly celebrating here.”
