Coming to Montreal: Brendan MacFarlane, co-founder Jakob + MacFarlane, the Paris-based firm of conceptual audacity

For the second edition of the Master Class series 2015, Montreal-based Index Design will host architect Brendan MacFarlane, co-founder Paris-based Jakob + MacFarlane,  He’ll talk about the challenges of working on projects that leave nobody indifferent.

The event takes place on Mar. 24, 6-8 p.m., at Index Design, 4310 boul. Saint-Laurent, Montreal. 

ABOUT JACOB+MACFARLANE  

Established in 1992, Jakob + MacFarlane architects is an agency of multicultural and multidisciplinary architects based in Paris, France. Its work explores digital technologies at times as abstract contribution and at times a means of manufacturing, using new materials as way of creating a more flexible and responsible environment.

ABOUT BRENDAN MACFARLANE

Brendan MacFarlane was born in New Zealand. He obtained a bachelors’ degree in architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture, Sci-ARC, in Los Angeles (1984). He went on to achieve his Master’s degree of architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of design in 1990. In collaboration with Dominique Jakob, Jacob + MacFarlane realized several striking and symbolic architectural projects of in France, among them Restaurant Georges in the Pompidou Center, Docks – City of fashion and design in Paris; or the Orange Cube and the Euronews headquarters, both located in Lyon.

The projects currently in progress include the Conservatoire de Danse et Musique à Noisy-le-Sec; the reconstruction of a Gaumont-Pathé theatre complex in Paris; and the construction of a multi-use tower and the downtown area of Knokke-Heist, in Belgium.

MacFarlane has taught in several architecture schools internationally, in particular the Harvard School of Design, Sci-Arc, at the University of Florida, the Bartlett School of Architecture and is the special guest judge for the Architectural Association of London.

The work of Jakob + MacFarlane is recognized around the world, receiving the International Architecture Award awarded by the Chicago Athenaeum in 2014 and nominated for the Mies van der Rohe European Architecture Award in 2015.
