Between a sculpture and a comfortable place: Matrizia by Ron Arad for Moroso

One of my favourite discoveries at  this year’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan is Matrizia by Ron Arad for Moroso. How to describe it? It’s a sculpture, an exemplary junction between design skill and craft talent. A random meeting becomes the pretext for creating a sofa that overcomes, shunning its provocative or symbolic scope, the temptation of the read made.

A wool mattress abandoned on a pavement offers itself up in this way as an objet trouvè, encouraging an imaginary operation of salvage and decontextualization. The mattress, at the end of its life cycle, inspires new forms of use in the designer, offering itself as the preliminary indication for further structural analysis.

In other words: it’s something else.
