New Zealand-based lighting designer David Trubridge comes to Toronto
Internationally renowned lighting designer David Trubridge is in Toronto today, following WantedDesign NYC as part of his North American tour. The recent recipient of two Red Dot Design Awards, he will be giving a presentation on the importance of beauty in design and how it relates to design sustainability.
He will be at the Dark Tools showroom (4 Carlaw Ave., #7), at an event hosted by Salex (http://www.salex.ca/ ), from 4 to 8 p.m. A copy of his book – the cleverly titled So far (see his bio below) – will be awarded as a door prize.
Trubridge’s unique and sustainable designs have caught the attention of many lighting designers – both professional and DIY. A selection of his products are featured in Extant, a Steven Spielberg-produced sci-fi series starring Halle Berry, and his fixtures also light up the Spotify head office in London, U.K. (to drop a couple of named admirers).
Originally from the U.K., Trubridge and his family set sail around the world in 1981. Navigating throughout the Caribbean and the Pacific on a boat that became their home for four years, he arrived and settled in New Zealand. Combining his passion for the environment and his experience as a furniture maker, Trubridge created a furniture and lighting fixtures company that is now a leader in green business models.
He designs to provide cultural nourishment and to tell stories, two things that are prominent in his carefully crafted products. His collections are manufactured using bamboo as the primary material and his light fixtures are sold as kitsets for ease of assembly by customers.
