Luxury appliance manufacturer Sub-Zero Group, Inc. announced that two Toronto-based design professionals are among 53 national and international winners in its biennial Kitchen Design Contest:
- Philippe Beauparlant of Beauparlant Design Inc.
- Steven Comisso and Mary Ellen Lynch of Lynch + Comisso: Architecture + Light
“The Kitchen Design Contest is one way that we can thank talented industry professionals for their ongoing support of our brands, and also recognize their dedication to creating phenomenal kitchens for their clients,” said Michele Bedard, vice president of marketing for Sub-Zero and Wolf.
Philippe Beauparlant’s “Riverdale Residence”
Philippe Beauparlant’s client wanted a more functional kitchen for a family with plenty of room to gather, as well as ample storage. Beauparlant offered a unified space that plays off of simplicity and honesty in materials and finishes. The judges agreed that the design features a fresh take on a white kitchen, while the pro-style appliances are the perfect complement to the overall simplicity. “The kitchen is the best it can be,” Beauparlant said. “‘Award-winning’ is highly subjective. For the homeowner, the new kitchen is where she spends most of her day. She loves it, and that’s enough for us.”
Steven Comisso’s “Boathouse Kitchen”
Steven Comisso and Mary Ellen Lynch were given full freedom when it came to redesigning the “Boathouse Kitchen.” The only real goal from the client was that the kitchen be integrated into the general design of the house, but not overwhelm it. This kitchen’s hidden functionality and integration into the overall interior design of the room are what make it unique. “It can now function with the living room as a venue for entertaining guests in a casual way,” Comisso said. The stunning originality of this design caught the eyes of the judging panel. The functional layout and selection of equipment in the space did not go unnoticed.
All 53 regional winners will receive a trip for two to the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, an AAA Five-Diamond resort in Scottsdale, Arizona, to attend the national Kitchen Design Contest Best of the Best Summit and Gala September 13-16, 2015. There, more than $110,000 in cash prizes will be given away to the global kitchen designs.
The seven KDC judges evaluated more than 1,700 entries from 48 states in the U.S. and 16 countries worldwide to determine the most innovative, functional and beautiful kitchen designs using Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances. The jury included:
- Jamie Drake of Drake Design Associates, New York, N.Y.;
- Doug Durbin of nuHaus, Chicago, Ill.; E.J. Meade of Arch 11, Inc., Boulder, Colo.;
- Cristina Menezes of Arquitetura e Decoração LTDA, Brazil;
- Matthew Quinn of Design Galleria, Atlanta, Ga.;
- Friedemann Weinhardt of Design First Interiors, Ottawa, Ontario;
- Vasi Ypsilantis of The Breakfast Room, Ltd., Manhasset, N.Y.
Eligibility for the contest required that all design and construction be fully completed within the contest period of January 1, 2013, through December 31, 2014. Qualifying kitchen designs had to include at least one full-size Sub-Zero built-in or integrated refrigeration unit and at least one Wolf cooking appliance as primary food preparation equipment, including ranges, rangetops, ovens, and cooktops. Eligibility for the next Sub-Zero and Wolf Kitchen Design Contest will begin early 2016, with submissions being accepted throughout early 2017.
