Henzel Studio partners with Paddle8 to end child labour in the carpet industry
HENZEL STUDIO has partnered with PADDLE8 for an auction that will benefit GOODWEAVE, the world’s leading international nonprofit organization working to end child labour in the carpet industry, while offering educational opportunities to children in weaving communities.
GoodWeave was founded on a simple premise: If enough people demand certified child-labor-free rugs, manufacturers will employ only skilled, adult artisans, and children will no longer be exploited in the carpet industry. GoodWeave currently operates in six countries — Afghanistan, India and Nepal, and in the consumer countries of Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
All Henzel Studio rugs carry The GoodWeave label, and its certification is the best assurance that a rug is child-labour-free. GoodWeave partners must be licensed under the GoodWeave certification program, and pay a licensing fee that helps support the organizations’ monitoring, inspections and education programs.
“As a committed partner in GoodWeave’s mission to end child labor, Henzel Studio is bridging the finest contemporary artists in the world to one of the most pressing human rights problem of our time,” said Nina Smith, CEO GoodWeave International.
To further bring to light GoodWeave’s tireless work, HENZEL STUDIO has supported the organization by making its collections of handmade artist designed rugs available for auction via Paddle8. Since the launch of HENZEL STUDIO COLLABORATIONS at BARNEYS NEW YORK Madison Avenue in 2014 during Frieze Art Fair, the brand has developed art rugs by fifteen contemporary artists that include RICHARD PRINCE, HELMUT LANG, JACK PIERSON, ASSUME VIVID ASTRO FOCUS, SCOTT CAMPBELL, RICHARD PHILLIPS, MARILYN MINTER, MICKALENE THOMAS AND ANSELM REYLE.
Via HENZEL STUDIO HERITAGE, extensive collections have also been developed in collaboration with artist estates, that to date include THE ANDY WARHOL FOUNDATION FOR THE VISUAL ARTS and TOM OF FINLAND FOUNDATION.
The auction also marks the unveiling of a rug designed by WILHELM SASNAL. A unique rug of the TOM OF FINLAND FOUNDATION logo the artist designed for his organization will be offered exclusively for this auction.
Free to disregard design movements and related principles and rules, the featured artists were invited to freely and seamlessly translate their work and artistic ethos into the media at hand, exploring shape, volume and finishing, where practicality was secondary to concept. This creative brief allows all artists to embrace the outcome as part of their body of work.
Select rugs will exclusively for this auction be accompanied by artist signed certificates of authenticity. All rugs are numbered and certified by HENZEL STUDIO. Each rug, regardless of artist, is priced per square foot and will be offered at a predetermined size.
