Winners announced for Quebec’s Grands Prix du Design
This week, the winners of Quebec’s 11th edition of the Grands Prix du Design were revealed. Celebrating the best new architecture and design across la belle province, this year’s awards lauded nearly 60 projects, ranging from small-scale interior design solutions and temporary installations to some of the largest construction and redevelopment projects in North America.

This year, CannonDesign and NEUF architects won the overall Project of the Year Award for the design and architecture of the University of Montreal Hospital Center. The massive CHUM ‘superhostpital’ was also awarded the Health and Research Establishment, Accessibility, and Common Area awards. (Last year, the project was also a winner at our 2oth anniversary Best of Canada Competition).

The Emerging Achievement Award was presented to the Creative Architecture Agency ADHOC, recognizing both the firm’s achievement and future potential, notably marked by the recent completion of the well-received Place Wellington and Sylvestre projects.

Alongside the awards, a tribute was also presented to Jacques Guillon, a multidisciplinary, pioneering Quebec designer. Born in 1922, Guillon came to prominence in the midst of Montreal’s mid-century boom. Among his most easily recognized accomplishments is the symbol and signage system for the Montreal Métro. Guillon was also a prolific designer of furniture and interiors. He participated in mounting exhibitions that include the scientific exhibit at the Pavilion of Man at Expo 67 and many others at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa.

This year’s Grands Prix du Design awards were held at the Montreal Casino, on February 13. A full list of winners — including a comprehensive gallery of project photos — is available via the Grands Prix du Design website, linked here.
