In May and June, the one-day DesignEx trade shows are coming to Okanagan, British Columbia, and Kitchener, Ontario, creating a showcase for the local and national design industry. According to the Interior Designers of Canada (IDC) “DesignEx trade shows are a great alternative to regular trade shows. They are cost-effective, intimate events where instead of a booth companies are given a table top to showcase their newest or most popular products to qualified professionals and specifiers, including interior designers, architects and others from the industry.” The DesignEx events also ” typically garner approximately 88% of the local registered interior designers.”
DesignEx Okanagan will take place on May 16, while the Kitchener event will take place a month later on June 19th. A full schedule for May’s Okanagan event is available below, with a schedule for Kitchener’s event linked here.

NETWORKING FOR BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT —This workshop is focused on learning the proven techniques for beingmore effective at business development networking. While addressing the needs of senior professionals it is especially useful for those who are shy, introverted or are uncomfortable making new personal marketing connections.

CO-PRESENTER: CAROL JONES, KASIAN ARCHITECTURE
Carol Jones is a Senior Principal in an international firm, Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd . Areas of practice include hospitals, universities, airports, palaces, public buildings, mixed use retail developments and corporate facilities. Carol’s professional experience has included practice in several Canadian cities and her interest in design education has been reflected in teaching appointments at two universities. Carol has over 40 years of experience in planning and design, with a focus on design for the high performance workplace. She has significant experience in designing for the both the private and public sector. Considered an expert on workplace programming and planning, Carol speaks and writes on this topic both nationally and internationally, and projects under her leadership have been widely published and have received numerous awards.
CO-PRESENTER: RICHARD POLLACK, POLLACK CONSULTING
Richard began his second career as Pollack Consulting in 2011 after transitioning Pollack Architecture (now Rapt Studio) to its next generation of leadership, he was also elected by his peers to both the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), Richard is an experienced statesman of commercial interior architectural design as well as one of its most enlightened futurists. A sought-after speaker, he has made addresses to groups including: IIDA (he is a past international president); AIA (he is a past National Chair of the Interiors Committee); International Facility Management Association (IFMA); NeoCon; Design Futures Council; lecturer at California College of the Arts (CCA); and CoreNet Global. He studied engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Pratt Institute after which he escaped from Brooklyn and headed west. He also co-founded PdK Consulting, whose proprietary research and metrics gauge the impact of design on workplace performance optimization.
SPECIFICATIONS AND THEIR ROLE IN THE PROJECT
Specifications are as important to the successful completion of a project as the design documents, however in many instances they are put together at the last minute as somewhat of an afterthought. The conversation in an office can sometimes be…… “Hey all, what are we forgetting?…..OH YEAH! The specifications…. Let’s use the same ones we had for the last project…..” This may sound flippant, however it’s often true. Upon completion of this presentation, attendees will have a better understanding of the importance of specifications in the overall design and execution of construction pro.
PRESENTER: GLENN CHATTEN, PRINCIPAL, WORDCLEAR SPECIFICATIONS
Glenn Chatten is the owner and principal of Wordclear Specifications, which specializes in creating, editing and publishing procurement and contractural documents, technical specifications, and reports associated with interior design and architecture, and which are used throughout the construction industry for tendering, pricing and building. Glenn has amassed a wealth of technical expertise from 35 years in the profession, and shares this knowledge through his love of teaching and extensive communication skills.
FORMS OF CONTRACT, CONTRACT DOCUMENTS, SITE MEETINGS AND WALK-THROUGHS
This presentation will address key contractual documents such as project schedules, as well as the possible involvement of industry representatives in preparing or influencing these. We will also explore the different forms of contract and contract documents, together with their practical implementation within the construction process
