Nanimarquina Collection for Coalesse Celebrates Craft Traditions
Coalesse and Spanish rug company nanimarquina have launched a design partnership centered around crafted tradition and modern nature.
The Nanimarquina Collection for Coalesse includes six patterns, each in five colour variations and three sizes, exploring the warmth, comfort and residential soul of hand-woven rugs, bringing new life to work.
“With an increase in open spaces and hard floor surfaces, rugs are becoming an increasingly important design element to help ground today’s work settings by forming natural boundaries while absorbing sound,” says Lew Epstein, General Manager for Coalesse. “The Nanimarquina Collection for Coalesse will bring a greater sense of warmth, vitality and soul, as well as visual and physical comfort to the workplace.”
As a family-owned company in Barcelona, Spain, nanimarquina specializes in contemporary rug designs using traditional, hand-crafted techniques.
For this collaboration, traditionally crafted hand-tufted and hand- loomed dhurrie weaves are adapted with materials that broaden applications, including outdoor use.
A specially curated palette from the Coalesse colour point of view is the foundation of the collection, featuring rich, elemental tones from both land and sea that draw in the senses.
Each abstract, textured pattern is subtle yet familiar, inspired by organic forms found in nature and in the geometry of weaving techniques.
“When we collaborate, we look for a partner who brings a knowledge and a passion to the thing they do well,” says John Hamilton, Global Design Director for Coalesse. “The nanimarquina team has a Mediterranean sensibility about them – a really special, authentic way of looking at design challenges by taking an artistic approach to creating rugs with a high standard of execution.”
After long development into the use of different fibers, nanimarquina developed a way to craft weather-resistant outdoor rugs by combining ancestral weaving techniques with a recycled PET fiber.
“At nanimarquina, we make tradition contemporary. Our rugs are modern in styling, yet our designs and motifs reflect different cultures and ancient weaving techniques,” says Nani Marquina. “Working with Coalesse was a natural process, resulting in craft at its finest.”
Strokes
Rhythm and line.
Minimal, interlacing linework is adapted from a set of hand-drawn, sequenced marks over solid colour fields. Varied patterns form a family of gestural rugs that can be combined for large areas. The linear designs share coordinating tonal, neutral colorations. Hand-tufted in 100 per cent new wool.
Shadows
Abstract leaves.
Inspired by the shadows cast by plant foliage, an organic pattern emerges that moves irregularly across the rugs. Shadows capture the gentle vitality of light, branches and leaves, with an intricacy pleasing to the senses, in warm combinations of earth tones. Hand-tufted in 100 per cent new wool.
Basket
Open weave.
Looking closely at light passing through a woven basket, a mesh pattern emerges with gaps and variations. Enlarged and slightly faded for a more abstract geometric field, the design explores dark and light natural colour combinations. Hand-tufted in 100 per cent new wool.
Patch
Panels and fringe.
This modern take on the traditional dhurrie is made of patch-like panels that have been individually dyed, hand-loomed and sewn together by hand. The fringing is complete on some borders, and playfully placed on others for graphic impact. Hand-loomed flat-weave dhurrie construction, crafted from 100 per cent hand-spun New Zealand wool to give the rugs a distinctive variegated colour.
Diagonal (outdoor)
Graphic twill.
A classic twill weave is enlarged into a diagonal- textured pattern with wide borders coloured in coordinating shades for bolder visual interest. For outdoor use, the five colour combinations reference soft botanical and earth tones. Hand-loomed flat-weave dhurrie construction in 100 per cent recycled PET.
Mesh (outdoor)
Warp and weft.
Reminiscent of bamboo matting and other natural banded weaves, this design combines two different PET fiber weights to create varying textures in a unique dimension of the weaving across both warp and weft. Mesh outdoor rugs include two patterns in five banded and colour-blocked combinations, across a range of subtle colourways. Hand-loomed flat-weave dhurrie construction in 100 per cent recycled PET.
