Karim Rashid partners with Istituto Marangoni for a scholarship program

Istituto Marangoni has established a scholarship program competition with Karim Rashid to support one student per year completing their masters course. The competition calls for “Humanizing Distance” projects for a furniture piece that promotes social distancing.

The projects will require applicants to propose a presentation that explains how potential users would interact with the design and the context in which it lives.

Designers are encouraged to show their full design process and may include design research, ideation sketches, drawings & diagrams, mock-ups & prototypes, CAD modeling and renderings, and all other ways to best represent their idea.

Applicants will be eligible for consideration for the Scholarship if they meet the following criteria:

a) be a prospective UK, EU, Tier 4 International Istituto Marangoni student who has applied for and met the general requirements for a qualifying Masters degree course;
b) be liable to pay the full tuition fees applicable for your jurisdiction (for example, you are not a sponsored student); and
c) achieve the minimum academic standards set out below.

Qualifying courses: full-time one-year Masters degree course in Product Design at Istituto Marangoni London starting in February 2021.

Minimum academic standards: applicants must have achieved a 2:1 or 1st class honours degree classification (or non-UK equivalent such as merit or distinction) in a relevant undergraduate course. Non-native English speakers are required to provide an English language certificate at b2 CEFR level (ielts 6.5 without elements below 5.5)

Applicants must additionally submit a portfolio consisting of the following 2 digital documents, uploaded as 1 single pdf:

  • Document 1 – Project Interpretation: Include your reference research and your own interpretation the project theme listed below. Describe the design goal that you want to achieve through your project.  (Max 400 words overall); and
  • Document 2 – Creative Work: Show your project through renderings and/or imagery, structured as 3-5 page pdf presentation (with title page) on A3 panels in landscape orientation.  Drawings must be two per page (max) and scanned in 300dpi resolution.

The program also requires a 3-5 page submission pdf presentation on A3 panels in landscape orientation of a Furniture Piece/Set proposal that Promotes Social Distancing. The presentation should explain how potential users would interact with the design and the context in which it lives. A title page with the project name and a brief mission statement describing the proposal (up to 400 words) should also be included in addition to the 3-5 page graphic presentations.

Rashid will lead a jury of professionals, including teaching executives of Istituto Marangoni. The jury will evaluate the projects and award the winner with a 50 per cent scholarship to attend the Product Design Master’s Course (February 2021 intake) held at Istituto Marangoni London School of Fashion and Design.
