The Toronto Society of Architects (TSA) has announced the return of their three popular in-person programs as part of this year’s Doors Open Toronto (May 27-28, 2023).
An annual event organised by the City of Toronto in partnership with the wider community, Doors Open Toronto provides rare public access for one weekend only to architecturally and culturally significant buildings across the city. The free weekend-long celebration of architecture and public space is taking place on Saturday, May 27 and Sunday, May 28, and will feature more than 140 sites for exploration, walking tours, and more.
As part of Doors Open weekend, the TSA has organised three special programs reflecting on this year’s theme “City of Sound”, including a public panel discussion, architectural studio tours, and a one-hour walking tour.
Open Studio

Organized by the TSA in partnership with studios across Toronto, Open Studio provides the public behind-the-scenes access to architectural practices who are opening their doors and inviting you to come drop by! Visit the sites, meet the people behind our built environment, and talk to the architects, landscape architects, planners and interior designers helping shape our city! Explore their workspaces, ranging from converted storefronts to heritage properties and community hubs, and see how buildings and landscapes go from ideas to built realities. In addition to self-guided walks through the offices, many of the studios are also offering tours and talks throughout the weekend.

Architects Talk: Listening to Spaces

Have you ever stopped to listen to a space? Though invisible, sound is no less of an architectural material than wood, concrete or light—one that can be shaped and designed. This year’s Architects Talk will bring together five diverse sound-shaping speakers—including architects, acousticians, and researchers—for some fast-paced lightning presentations to share their thoughts, work and provocations on the relationship between space and sound.
This event will include presentations by Amanda Robinson, Brigitte Shim, Joseph Clarke, Robert Sims, and Tor Oiamo, and will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A moderated by Stefan Novakovic of AZURE magazine.

The Shape and Sound of Performance Walking Tour

From the symphony to musical theatre, Toronto is home to some of the most important and ambitious performance halls in the country, but have you ever wondered why they look (and sound) the way they do? Come join the TSA for one of their 6 one-hour long tours throughout the weekend and explore the relationship between performance, sound and architecture through case-studies with styles ranging from traditional shoe-box theatres to ground-breaking vineyard halls.
