The design for this bubble tea joint, located in Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre, posed some challenges for Markham, Ont.-based Ted Design International, to preserve the brand’s integrity while also increasing its appeal to fast-paced shoppers.

Real Fruit Bubble Tea Yorkdale’s existing retail shop contained challenging structural features that required the client’s new brand to adjust its overall operations and branding direction. As a result, Ted Design International’s core strategy was to present the client with a new way to deliver their brand and message, which involved moving towards a digital experience via a custom curved screen.

As such, graphics and videography through the screen was developed in part a solution to existing structural framings.

The client’s main goals for the project were to provide a multi-façade delivery of information and an ever-evolving centerpiece that acted as a beacon, create a sense of horizontal open space and freedom in a mainly vertical space and maintain a sense of being organic and fresh.

With these goals in mind, Ted Design International proposed the transition from traditional TV menus to wide custom screens in order to deliver an experiential media experience. This allowed the client to captivate guests with visuals and messaging anywhere in the project’s corridors. Self-serve kiosks both wall-mounted, and counter-mounted were also implemented to provide a continued experiential brand experience.

Since existing structural beams and columns cut the project’s available space in half, designers proposed a custom curved screen to allow for the loss of space to be a portal into the brand.

The 35-ft.-high store front features wooden diamonds in two tones; green and wood which aim to be reminiscent of the peels and surfaces of exotic fruits. Varied textures and shapes also give the illusion of various fruits and vegetables while spheric lights aim to add a sparkle like a drop of water on the surfaces. The custom curved screen also delivers additional visual history and animations of harvesting tea in Asia.
