Is there a better story than a love story? Inside Ottawa’s beloved Fairmont Château Laurier, the interior redesign of Wilfrid’s and Zoe’s embraces not just the grandeur of the landmark hotel, but also a deliberate dualism inspired by the extraordinary 50-year romance of Zoé Lafontaine and Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Zoe’s, conceived as an ethereal dining room softens the hotel’s imposing stone architecture through blush tones, lilac marble, botanical upholstery, and reflective finishes that lend the space a lighter, almost jewel-like quality. Across the threshold, Wilfrid’s lounge shifts dramatically in mood. Dark wood, lacquered surfaces, velvet seating, and richly veined stone amplify the depth and masculinity associated with our seventh prime minister, creating a more intimate environment anchored by a sculptural central bar and fireplace.
What makes the project compelling is its willingness to be bold within a protected heritage setting. Original mouldings and panelled walls remain visible, but contemporary insertions are handled with confidence rather than deference. The result feels less like preservation than conversation, allowing two distinct spatial personalities to coexist within the larger architectural language of one of Canada’s grand railway hotels.
