This house comprises two L-shaped volumes, one dedicated to private living, the other to the common spaces, connected by a glass bridge. The continuous brick façade is interrupted by garage doors and an oversized oak pivot entry door. Tumbled natural stone flooring and hot-rolled steel wall panels define the foyer, drawing the eye to a courtyard with a specimen tree, lit at night and serving as a focal point from multiple vantage points. Whereupon one turns right to the private quarters or left to cross the bridge to the communal wing. As the designer explains, this project “offers a rich sequence of experiences while challenging conventional expectations of residential scale.” Indeed, the client’s wish for a barn house sensibility resulted in a primary suite with the bed beneath a 14-ft. peaked ceiling, and a 25-ft.-tall A-frame great room, anchored at each end by sculptural forms housing the stove hood and fireplace.
