Sheltered + Exposed

February 15 - April 01, 2017
10242 106 St NW, Edmonton

Winter is a defining feature of life in Alberta and the cold climate can often be seen as a challenge to navigate. Many designs exist with winter in mind, however, this often involves an isolation from the elements, rather than a deliberate connection to a beautiful season. We shape our experience by favouring shelter from, or exposure to the frozen landscape. Sheltered + Exposed offers a discussion on the duality of shelter and exposure to winter, and how architecture and design can address these conditions.

The exhibit will present photographs, drawings and writings addressing winter design and will foster critical discussion around the practical and theoretical ideas of design and architecture in Alberta’s cold temperature built environment.

Media Architecture Design Edmonton (MADE) presents this exhibition with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, and will also be presenting a translated version of the Maison de l’Architecture du Québec’s exhibition Vivre et Concevoir avec la Neige au Québec.
