The brainchild behind Surrey, B.C. company Featureworx Creative Fabrication is Gerald Lauzé. He’s an artist with a background in computer animation for film and television.
Says Lauzé, “With a lifetime of working with my hands, I have come up with what I believe is my best piece yet: the Riga bench.” He introduced it at this year’s Interior Design Show West, held in Vancouver at the end of September. Lauzé notes that the Riga bench drew crowds at IDSwest, especially when he was reconfiguring it.
This particular version has five curved sections and four industrial-styled joints that allow it to be configured into a myriad of shapes. It can serve as a large coffee table in its fully closed position or a flowing 20-foot bench at its longest, with many pleasing shapes within its range of motion. It allows the same piece of furniture to be arranged into public seating or compressed into a shape affording a more intimate setting.
All main parts are CNC milled from laminated Douglas fir veneer lumber (LVL).
