HCMA’s way with maternity
Vancouver-based Hughes Condon Marler Architects (HCMA) recently completed its renovation of the Arch Hospital Maternity Unit – located in White Rock, B.C. – for Fraser Health Authority.
This project comprises eight new Labour Delivery Recovery Antepartum (LDRP) rooms, support service area upgrades (including a common family room), and a new doctor sleep room.
Fraser Health Authority has adopted and is implementing the current evidence-based design philosophy. The Authority’s desire was to implement a contemporary residential atmosphere family-centered care maternity facility allowing for family involvement during the birthing process. The LDRP room layout accommodates a designated family area and in-room overnight sleeping accommodations for partners or family members.
Throughout the schematic and design development stages, HCMA worked closely with the User Group members, including construction of a full-scale mock-up, to incorporate functional and procedural desires.
Highlights of the project include a residential feel and warm colour palette; a softer lighting strategy; sheet flooring; integrated equipment in millwork; an infant-monitoring system; and access control.
