In memoriam

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Carole Howlett, an ARIDO Fellow, Life member and past President.

Carole joined ARIDO in 1976 and was appointed to the Board in December 1985 assuming acting chairmanship of the Public Relations and Membership Services Committee. She served as President from 1989 to 1991 during which time Carole was instrumental in changes to Building Code by-laws, encouraging new Chapters to develop, and providing support programs to emerging interior designers. In 2000 Carole was recognized for the time and energy she devoted to ARIDO by then-president Kelly Stobbe. After becoming a Retired member in 2004, Carole presented Joe Pettipas of HOK with the IIDA Leadership Award of Excellence in 2009. She also served as Director on the Board of the Canadian Association of Women Executives for four years and was involved in a variety of community activities.

Born in Toronto, Carole studied interior design at the Ontario College of Art. Her career began in the offices of J & J Brook Limited, one of the first firms in Canada to provide design services for office, educational and institutional clients. C. Howlett Design Consultants Limited was established in 1982, providing planning and design services in the corporate and health care facilities fields.

Carole passed away on August 11, 2012 after a brief illness. At this time, there are no immediate plans for a service; Carole’s life will be celebrated privately with family and friends.
